Huge illuminated Asda sign at Hayle supermarket met with opposition

HUGE illuminated green signs that could be erected on Hayle's new Asda supermarket that would "dominate" the area, have been met with opposition from councillors and locals.
The chain supermarket has applied for changes to a planning application at the building on South Quay to allow for the 8ft high signs to be installed, which would be visible across St Ives Bay.
Hayle Town Council has strongly opposed the changes saying the original application prevented illuminated signs being erected to ensure the development would be more in keeping with the historic conservation area.
Graham Coad, mayor of Hayle, said the changes go against the original plans for the supermarket.
He said: "No supermarket had been signed up at the time the building was designed, so the building was built for Hayle Harbour, not any brand of supermarket and signage was always meant to be minimalistic and in tones similar to the building, not bright colours.
"Asda would have known this when they signed up for the building. It is part of, or borders on Hayle conservation area, where Hayle Town Council has a firm and long held policy of not permitting internally illuminated signage."
Since Asda submitted an application to change its original plans to Cornwall Council, residents have raised concerns.
David Baron, who opposed the changes, wrote to the council: "The store is meant to blend into its historical environs and putting a massive illuminated sign on it is completely against all that was intended. The sign is so large and bright that it will dominate the Foundry area and detract from the important, world renowned historical site. If this application is allowed it will set a precedent and other businesses in the Foundry area will want huge, lit-up signs on their premises. The Foundry area must be preserved."
The development has already caused concerns in Hayle after it was feared the site, which is part of the Cornwall and West Devon Mining World Heritage area, would lose its coveted status.
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) decided that the development did not cause substantial damage to the site but noted that ongoing work should limit adverse effect on the Outstanding Universal Value.
A spokesperson for Asda said: "Planning rules require a separate signage application and this is now with Cornwall Council for consideration."
