Renowned Westcountry breeders Joyce and Jacky Newbury enjoyed tremendous success with their team of homebred ponies competing at one of the country's most prestigious horse shows.

The mother and daughter team, founders of the Newoak Stud based at Alphington near Exeter, saw a string of ponies bearing their prefix claim an impressive haul of rosettes and sashes at the Royal International Horse Show.

Skewbald gelding Newoak Tobago Bay started the run of good fortune at the Hickstead show last week (July 26-31), with a fabulous sixth place in the BSPA Plaited Pony class, beautifully ridden by Kirsty Lockhart.

Dartmoor gelding Newoak Furious and Sam Roberts followed on from this, finishing in second place in the Mountain and Moorland Small Breeds. It came as another fantastic result in a great season for the ten-year-old by Shilstone Rocks Day of Fury, having won at Devon County both in-hand and ridden as well as qualifying for Olympia at Kent County and Horse of the Year Show (HOYS) at North of England Show.

The stud's team of Dartmoor ponies continued to hold their own in strong classes at the six-day show. Newoak Ballidear was sixth in the Mountain and Moorland Lead Rein, with Newoak Gold Edition eighth in the Pretty Polly Mountain and Moorland Lead Rein for William and Katie Parkin.

Newoak Star Edition and jockey Sydney Head came fourth in the Pretty Polly Mountain and Moorland First Ridden, but they were pipped to the post by Newoak Jester and Kate Hewson. Not only winning the class, the charming partnership went on to stand overall Pretty Polly Mountain and Moorland supreme champion.

And last but not least was the turn of Newoak Flower Girl and Emma James, who pulled off a cracking performance to win the Pretty Polly Show Pony class.

The six-year-old mare, by Llanarth Alley Cat, was bought for 13-year-old Emma by her grandmother Margaret Kivell. Since joining forces, the Helston-based pair have qualified for HOYS in the Search for a Star Show Pony and Show Hunter Pony class.

Jacky Newbury said: "As breeders it is the stuff dreams are made of. Not only are they out competing and winning at such a top level but they are most importantly children's ponies."

She added: "Well done to everyone involved, all the ponies looked and went amazing. Even if you didn't get the result you hoped for, be proud of all your efforts."
