One town in Cornwall has risen to the highest possible rate of new Covid cases, with many others seeing huge spikes.

Both parts of Newquay have a case rise average rate of more than 1,000 cases per 100,000 people, putting it in the top alert category.

Elsewhere in Cornwall both Helston and the Lizard Peninsula have seen large cases rises, as have Penryn and Launceston.

This is the latest data being reported on the government's cluster map, although it's worth remembering it's on a five-day delay.

For the seven days leading up to last Friday, July 16 - the most recent period covered - Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly saw cases rise by almost 1,000.

A total of 2,048 positive test results were recorded over that week, which is 941 more than had been recorded during the preceding seven days. This marked a 85% rise.

Data for the most recent five days is not shown due to being incomplete, but daily case figures show the numbers appear to be starting to drop again.

The case rate across the Duchy now averages 358.2 cases per 100,000 people, compared to 193.2 cases per 100,000 last Wednesday.

The highest rate of new cases on the latest cluster map can be found in Newquay, which has seen figures rise from a combined 89 cases across its two areas to 192 cases: Newquay West (82, up 45 cases - a case rate average of 1,107.7 cases per 100,000 people) and Newquay East (110 cases, up 58 - a rate average of 1,103.8 cases per 100,000 people).

Mid/West Cornwall 21 July

Neighbouring St Columb Minor & Porth is in the same position, with 90 cases (up 53 on the previous week) and a rate of 1,024.4 cases per 100,000.

However, St Columb Major & St Mawgan is faring better with half the number of cases at 45 (up 17).

Cases in Helston more than doubled across the same period, from 28 across the previous week to 72 the week after, while the Lizard Peninsula - referred to as 'The Lizard' on the map, but also including St Keverne, Mullion and the Meneage area - jumped from nine weekly cases to 47 cases across the seven days.

Penryn has gone 16 cases to 48 and further up Cornwall Launceston has risen from ten cases to 47.

East/Mid Cornwall 21 July

The map shows positive cases by 'Middle Super Output Area' - the name the government gives to the break-up of larger towns and groups of neighbouring towns and villages, with groupings covering a greater area than others.

The minimum population in each area is 5,000 and the average is 7,200.

Clusters are only shown when there are three or more new cases reported at any one time.

Anywhere with between zero and two cases shows white in order to "protect the privacy of individuals and prevent disclosure", the accompanying information states.
