Dear Friend of Hayle Harbour Trust,
We have been working behind the scenes to find a way to protect as much of our wonderful harbour as possible. We have been negotiating over a long period with ING and this has resulted in the offer of over 100 hectares of land. Once this is in the possession of the community we will be able to start the long process of reversing decades of decline.
Recently, I wrote to Peter Marsh, who is Cornwall Council's Corporate Director of Environment, to get a definitive statement as to whether Cornwall Council was interested in taking over Hayle as a municipal harbour and, if not, seeking his support for the Hayle Harbour Trust.
Today, I received his response in which he says that our approach "would appear to be a commendable route to explore for long term community management for the benefit of harbour users."
He confirmed that, given the current economic climate, it would not be prudent for Cornwall Council to take on the management of the harbour and said "I am therefore writing to offer the support of Cornwall Council to the HHTL Community Interest Company approach."
We are very pleased to be able to call upon the professional experience of Cornwall Council's officers and we can now move ahead with the daunting, but exciting, task of negotiating the transfer of the harbour and land.
We will share more information over the next few weeks as things unfold. Thank you for your support.
John Bennett, Chairman, Hayle Harbour Trust, Ltd.
