Treliske boss says second coronavirus wave most likely to hit in October

The boss at the Royal Cornwall Hospital has told Pirate FM that they are preparing for a second wave of coronavirus to hit in October.

There are currently only four patients with Covid-19 who are being treated at Treliske, and the hospital is starting to get back to business as usual.

But as people start to spend more time out and about and visitors are expected to visit the Duchy from the 4th of July, it means there could be a rise in virus cases.

Kate Shields is the Chief Executive at RCHT, she says there could be a small summer spike but a bigger spike is more likely to occur in the autumn.

"In regards to coronavirus we are very quiet, we have about four coronavirus positive patients in the hospital at the moment, and we are starting to get back to business as usual in terms of care and treatment in the hospital.

"We are preparing for a second wave, the rates of infection in Cornwall were very low, but now people are going out and about more and we are likely to get more visitors from others part of country from the 4th of July, we think it's likely we will see a second wave, so we are getting ready to manage it if and when it comes, if it doesn't come that's fine and if it does come we'll be ready.

"There's lots of modelling that's been done, and we are having to guess around what the R value is for Cornwall, so if we get to a point where where people are coming to Cornwall with higher levels of infection than we've got here then we think there could be a small summer spike. But we think it's much more likely that we will have a larger spike in October.

"As we're all out and about in the open air the transmission is lower than when we go back into our own homes, so as the weather gets cooler and we spend more time indoors that might be the time when we see higher levels of infection."

There have been reports that NHS staff across the country have been told not to take any annual leave in October, in case there is a second wave of coronavirus.

At Trelikse, staff who already have holiday booked in October are allowed to take it, but no more time off will be approved during the month as the hospital will be at capacity of what it can cope with.

"All of our staff who've booked leave in October will take it, as it's important that we don't run people into the ground and rest and relaxation is important for everybody, but we've probably got as much leave booked now in October that we can manage, whilst still running the hospital.

"So what we've said is we don't want any more people booking leave in October, although people who've already booked it will obviously be able to take their time off."

After last week's heatwave and images of tens of thousands of people flocking to beaches across the country, the boss at Treliske is urging people in Cornwall to keep up the social distancing measures.

It is hoped this will help encourage tourists, who can stay in the Duchy from the 4th of July, to do the same.

Kate Shields say Minor Injury Units often see a spike in numbers over the summer, but they are well prepared to cope.

"All of us in Cornwall need to be clear that this is our county and we want to support visitors coming here, but we've done really sensible stuff over the past few months, so we need to be really clear about social distancing, hand washing, disposing of rubbish, and generally looking after each other.

"So hopefully when visitors come here they will see this is how we do it in Cornwall and they will do the same."
