A glitch in the recording of coronavirus cases by the UK Government is behind the sharp increase in the number of positive tests recorded in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly over the weekend.

The updated figures show 98 cases were recorded over the weekend, up to Sunday night, with the latest total of positive tests in Cornwall and Isles of Scilly since the pandemic began totalling 1,507, as of Monday (October 5).

However, the updated statistics also show that Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly are significantly below the England average for cases per 100,000 people - with 25 cases for every 100,000 in the area compared to 45 per 100,000 for England.

The updated statistics come as the latest government coronavirus cluster map for September 25 to October 1 shows eight new clusters in Cornwall.

The new clusters, which are areas of more than two infections in an area of approximately 7,500 people. These areas are Probus and Roseland with five cases, as well as Altarnun and Stoke Climsland, Launceston, St Germans and St Mellion, Lostwithiel and Penwithick, Shortlanesend, Chacewater and Carnon Downs, St Day and Lanner and Penryn, all with three cases each.

This is in addition to a number of areas which have existing clusters of infection, with the areas reporting cases also including Kingsand, Antony and Maryfield in South East Cornwall, Camborne (East, West and South), Redruth (North, South), Pool and Illogan Highway, The Lizard, Saltash Town and Pillmere, Lanreath, Pelynt and Polraun, Illogan and Portreath and St Columb Minor and Porth.

At least 10 per cent of the total for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly since the outbreak began is linked to a major outbreak at the Pilgrim’s Pride (formerly Tulip) food processing factory in Pool, where it was revealed that over 170 cases of coronavirus had been recorded.

The discovery of the mostly asymptomatic cases at the production facility was described by a spokesperson for Pilgrim’s Pride as a number greater than the total for all their other factories. The spokesperson said: “These are the first positive cases we have experienced at our site in Redruth since the outbreak of COVID-19 in the UK and appear to coincide with the outbreaks seen more widely around the county.

“To put this into context, we have seen significantly more cases of COVID-19 in Cornwall over the past 14 days than we have experienced within our business of 6,000 employees located in 13 sites across the UK – including Manchester, West Midlands and Leicestershire – since the onset of this pandemic.

“We recognise our role and responsibilities within our community and continue to follow and exceed government guidelines as we have been since March when COVID-19 restrictions were introduced. We have also implemented additional measures where they bring benefit to particular situations. We audit our own compliance of all COVID-19 controls daily.”
