Debenhams to spearhead new £35m shopping mall at Hayle
Wednesday, September 04, 2013
Plans have been unveiled to build a £35 million shopping mall on the outskirts of a West Cornwall town.
High street favourite Debenhams has been lined up to be the anchor tenant of the new development at Hayle which, it is hoped, will create up to 450 new jobs.
The scheme is being promoted by Cranford Developments for a site next to their existing West Cornwall Shopping Park, which is already home to a branch of M&S, Next and Boots. Rob Hadfield, Director of Property Acquisitions, from Debenhams said it would be a great spot for the store.
"We are delighted to be part of this exciting project at Hayle," he said.
"This is the right development in the right location, which gives us the confidence to expand our offer in Cornwall with a store that can accommodate our full range of home and fashion products."
Bill Oakley, Chairman of Cranford Developments, which built West Cornwall Shopping Park in 2006, said it would boost the local economy.
"Our plan is to develop a site next to the existing West Cornwall Shopping Park, reinforcing Hayle as one of Cornwall's leading shopping destinations. It will bring Debenhams and other leading UK retailers to the town. This is a major investment that will generate around 450 retail jobs for local people." Mr Oakley said the firm was keen to listen to what local people thought about the plans, which include transport and environmental improvements, with an enhanced county wildlife site and improvements to the A30. He said 4,000 leaflets would be delivered to local homes, a series of exhibitions staged and a website launched for people to give their feedback online at www.hayleshoppingpark.co.uk.
