Hayle fire super station plans to go before planning group
Friday, September 06, 2013
A MEETING to discuss the planning application for the building of a new fire station in Hayle will take place at County Hall this month.
The £1 million plan would see the ambulance service and the police working from the shared facilities and is part of the Camborne, Pool, Redruth and Hayle Emergency Cover programme, under which the existing Camborne and Redruth community fire stations would be relocated to two new sites in Tolvaddon and Hayle.
Several objections have been made to the plans from residents living nearby the proposed Commercial Road site, who have questioned the building of the station on an area deemed to be a high flood risk.
Hayle resident Kate Fletcher claimed: "The Environment Agency has been told other sites considered for a possible fire station were even less suitable than Commercial Road car park, despite the very high flood risk there."However, according to the planning documentation, four of the six sites considered were merely various parts of Commercial Road car park. Therefore, in reality, only three sites were considered."
Other concerns raised were that the waterfront would become inaccessible and it would have a detrimental effect on traffic.
Earlier in the year, Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service held a community consultation to assess opinion on the plans.
Cornwall Council Cabinet member for homes and communities Geoff Brown said: "In order to ensure that the site selected for the new fire station would offer the best solution for the area, we reviewed potential sites in terms of population reached within the ten-minute critical response time in conjunction with the development potential of the site.
"This approach ensured we considered in great detail all available sites and as a result, Commercial Road was selected as the site."
The proposals have been met with no objections from the Environment Agency or Natural England.
The application is due to be seen by the area planning committee on September 23, and is expected to be supported.
