Hayle beach campaigners given update on sluicing works at the harbour
| Posted: May 16, 2014
MEMBERS of an environmental campaign group in Hayle visited the harbour on Saturday to look at the progress of work which will see sluicing reintroduced to the town.
Campaigners from Save Our Sand (SOS) were taken around South Quay to hear about the changes which will be made in the entrance to the channel.
The organisation, which campaigns to protect and preserve beaches in Hayle and St Ives Bay, has been committed to seeing sluicing reintroduced.
As part of the redevelopment of the harbour, owners ING made an agreement to reinstate sluicing, investing up to £1 million in the historic method of keeping the channel clear.
Pete Jamieson, secretary of SOS, said: "Save Our Sand fully support the work at Carnsew to restore the sluicing system there to full working order.
"Although this is only half the original set-up we are confident that, if used properly, a restored system will have a big positive impact on the channel and beach.
"We look forward to the return of sluicing to Hayle. Well done to all concerned."
The age-old practice of sluicing, which helps to reduce the build-up of sand and keep channels open, was discontinued in the second half of the 19th century.
New water control gates will be installed at Carnsew Pool by construction company Bowmer and Kirkland (B&K) who are currently building the Asda supermarket.
The gates have yet to be put in place.
They will be a replica of the pair which originally featured in the harbour in 1789.
Hayle Town Council believes the work is paramount to the preservation of the site.
B&K project manager, Simon Humphrey, said: "The group was invited to get an idea of the whole site.
They were interested in the gates. We are going to look to do some fundraising with SOS in the future."
A completion date for the work has not yet been confirmed.
